Help on Every Corner

These two women we in the British Naval Reserve and had been called up for two months of special duty.  They are just an example of how many British citizens were contributing to the Olympic experience.  I told them my nephew Ted was in the U.S. Navy and they wanted to know how old he was. They were taking a few hours off to shop at the Greenwich Market.

These teenagers were also in Greenwich near the light rail stop, answering questions, thanking fans for coming to the Olympics and SMILING!They were definitely enjoying their volunteer responsibilities. So nice to have friendly people everywhere to offer their help.

The Prime Meridian runs through Greenwich. The time here is used as the standard throughout the world. Everyday at precisely 1:00 pm, an orange ball slides down a pole on top of the Royal Observatory. In olden times ships on the Thames would set their clocks to this ball.  Unfortunately the observatory wasn't open because the park around it was fenched off for the equestrian competition.  In 2002 Elizabeth and I toured the observatory and had fun standing with a foot in each hempisphere.
Getting to Greenwich today, I took the Docklands Light Rail (DLR) from our hotel until I reached the north edge of the River Thames.  Then I took the footpath under the river.  The weather was sunny, rainy, humid, breezy, beautiful and seemed to change off and on all day. The policeman was helping me with directions.  Wanted the kids to see his hat!
